The Award

October 3rd, 2010

Hey guys! I’m back!

Well, I’ve been back home for a few days, but they’ve been rather… full … for lack of a better word, hence the prolonged absence.

Today, I’d like to share something truly very special.

That there is my father’s brand-spanking-new award.

My father has just been promoted to Commendatore (Commander) of the Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana (Order of Merit of the Italian Republic)! The Order of Merit is the highest ranking honour of the Italian Republic. This award was signed by Giorgio Napoletano, Italy’s current President, and countersigned by Romano Prodi.

Some years ago Italy awarded him with the Knighthood (so basically he now skipped the rank of Ufficiale and went straight to Commander). He’s also been awarded with Knighthoods of the National Orders of Merit by both the French and the Spanish.

All for civil services rendered to all three states over a highly distinguished and extraordinary career.

You can see two of the medals in the Still Life gallery on my main website, pictured together with a very old portrait of my mother.

Few people can claim to have received any of these National Orders of Merit, and fewer still can claim to have been awarded all of them. He’s a great man (and clearly that is not just my opinion). It’s refreshing when all the effort and work he’s put in over the years is recognised and appreciated.

I took this picture over the weekend, lighting the award with two studio stobes fitted with softboxes.

More coming soon (though is still likely to be somewhat erratic – bear with me)!

A Stolen Moment

September 23rd, 2009

When I was going through my photo albums sorting and choosing the pictures that would go onto my main website there were a number of shots that I enjoy immensely that nevertheless never made the final cut, for whatever reason.

Such as this stolen moment here.

I took this off one of the islands dotted around Abu Dhabi. I made a goodly number of pictures that day, but this is one of the small handful that speak to me.

I like the colours, play of light and delicacy of the unguarded gesture…

Subscriptions

September 8th, 2009

It seems the FollowSite subscriptions (through the “Subscribe/Follow” button at the bottom of each post) are proving rather unrealiable and many of you have told me that you’re not recieving updates whenever there’s a new post.

Given this problem, I’ll be removing the FollowSite application from the blog in the coming day or two to give a chance for you to switch over to the infinitely more reliable Feedburner subscription options (via both RSS and email) which you can find in the right-hand column.

Should you like, you can find out more about RSS here.

Do let me know if you continue to have problems with the subscriptions. Cheers!

Captions

August 30th, 2009

Well, I was supposed to scramble out of town for work and a few weddings, but instead I was (and it seems for the next few days will remain) bedridden with a rather strong flu (no, not H1N1, thank you) and bronchitis. The joy.

Well, the good news is that I managed to get around to doing what a number of you have requested: adding captions to the shots on my website, indicating where and when they were taken.

Enjoy!

There goes the first update to my website.

A number of friends have suggested they’d like to see the pictures displayed in a larger size, and so here it is.
