All That Jazz

December 10th, 2009

The photo below features six cranes. Can you guess where it was taken?

If you guessed Beirut, you’d be right. It’s sprouting like mushrooms, it is.

Here I’ve put together a mishmash of shots from Beirut’s Downtown district and the new Downtown Souq. All taken on the same day.

The Souq was being given the last finishing touches and stores had just started opening when I was there.

Below you can see the open air seating which was used for this year’s Beirut Jazz Festival. The last concert in the lineup was held the evening after my arrival and I missed it…

The facade of the building by the Jazz Festival seating, damage from the war still visible. Eventually, this building too will be restored and modernised.

I have no idea why there’s a big horrid orange wooden structure in the Souk. Not sure I really want to know.

At the entrance to the Souk, there is an open space in which stands this age-old cupolla.

The Farm House

November 30th, 2009

On my last trip to Lebanon, a friend gave me the chance to visit a 400-odd year old farm house which is currently being renovated in the hills above Batroun.

It’s a beautiful little structure that’s completely held together at the moment by wood beams and metal bars.

Take a tour below:

The Forest (D700, Tamron 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 24mm, f3.5, ISO 200, 1/80sec + flash SB900)

Lights and Metal (D700, Tamron 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 24mm, f3.5, ISO 200, 1/80sec + flash SB900)

It was like walking through a dark metal forest.

The farmhouse is a single-story structure. The roof was accessible via a rickety ladder.

This is the old oven:

I had arrived to the farm land in late afternoon, just before sunset. Serendipitous really, as it allowed me to experiment a little with longer exposures and a flash.

They’re evidently quite serious about the renovation:

Before I leave you, I’d like to share something with you that completely blew me away: an experimental 360-degree panoramic music video. I could watch 360-degree panorama videos all day.

AD Light by Night

September 25th, 2009

Abu Dhabi is a very different place by night.

It has an intriguing palette of multi-coloured incandescent and fluorescent lights that all but chase the darkness away. Here are two shots taken from opposite ends of the city.
