August 21st, 2009

Well, summer is ending after having barely begun and the holy month of Ramadan is upon us again.

It’s odd, Ramadan for me will always signify summer – I guess due to my earliest memories of it in my first years of school/kindergarten… (If you want to find the applicable dates and years, you can have some fun here)

The pace of life in this city will slow, and the nights will come to life in the form of long water-pipe sessions in good company in the Suhoor tents set up around the city…

It’s Ramadan and Baghdad is in the news again (see also here), and unfortunately not in a good way.  I recently had a discussion with a friend about the importance of stories. All this reminds me of a story called Ramadan, which is set in Baghdad at the time of the Caliph Haroun Al Rashid. It’s a story about storytelling, of the hope and the comfort it may bring, and of dreams and how powerful they can be.

It was written by one of my favourite authors, Neil Gaiman, and is a story from his critically-acclaimed Sandman series.

This should give you an idea of what Neil Gaiman’s Ramadan is about.

You can find Ramadan among the stories in The Sandman: Fables and Reflections, which I cannot recommend enough.

You can find out more about Neil here.

Now, back to the main point of this post: Ramadan Mubarak to one and all!

P.S.: Look out for some new pictures to be posted in the next few days.
